"Whether they admit it openly or in secret to themselves, many men, perhaps most men in our society have a deep wish to understand what it really means to be a man. This does not mean that they are not men, but that they lack a satisfactory explanation of exactly who it is they are supposed to be. Men don't study themselves from this point of view; they accept social norms and standards, and simply 'carry on regardless'."

![]() "IMPOSSIBLE DREAM" First Annual Northern Ontario Men's Conference DATE AND VENUE TO BE ARRANGED Mountaintop apologizes for any inconvience arising from this change. WHY A MEN'S CONFERENCE? WHAT'S THIS ABOUT MEN'S STUDIES? THE N.O.R.M. CONFERENCE "What does it mean to be a man?" IT IS FOR MEN WHO already pursuing goals in this area. This conference is also for men who have some experience with men's groups, and who wish to participate in the growth of this field in Northern Ontario. As well, male counsellors and volunteers who work with men will find valuable direction, and their awareness of men's needs will be greatly enhanced. This is an alcohol-free event. CONFERENCE THEMES Speakers have agreed to speak spontaneously of their experience with the chosen topics, not from prepared academic papers. Their time has also been limited so that panelists and other contributors will have a chance to present their viewpoints and experience. Time is also allotted for questions from the audience, either anonymously, or in person. Experience shows that men respond most positively by hearing other men 'open up', and this is what this conference is about: opening up to the themes outlined here.
